the science or the art or decision making

Decision making.. is it mathematical solving equation or decision making backed with scientific tools? or is plain guess work.
in the past few days I have been contemplating this thought. Before I head any further let me settle some dust out here. to me decision making is not the question and answer module to derive the outcome which will tell me what action I need to do. like I don't have to involve my self in making decision between choosing at kick start or self start my bike.

Decision making is about selecting the best action that I need to do, to do a task, or maneuver my self, the result of such action would be futuristic, and outcome of the decision that I make or the road that I travel may affect me and ppl around me.

I am told it’s a science fused with mathematical calculation, which can help you to understand the best option. I am told that it also gives me options and the risk factor attached with each option
Alright I am pretty crude at this, I have had no formal training nor have I read any books for decision making, however of what I have been able to learn from ppl is that I have to pin down all the factors that may affect the course of action that I am contemplating about, and then I need to draw a road map and attach all the possible outcome and the factors on the flip side. I am also told that I can work on the risk factor for each of these outcomes. And then I come down to the calculation, based upon the investment, returns, and risk factors of each of the outcome I pick the best.

However despite the convincing argument I believe that it not the way decisions are made. If I were to believe the scientific tool, then I am unable to answer the argument “why is that we fail in lot many decision that we make” if science and math are the best of the tools that I can use, and I fail despite using them, then what is the X factor that is vital in decision making.

This post of mine carries no conclusion, because by now you may have guessed, I have no conclusion to make, rather it’s an attempt to understand what it is. Looking fd to understand form you, the science or the art or decision making.

  1. ooo.. looks like you have been thinking a lot on this.. is your worries about 'how to make decisions' OR 'how not to fail'. For me decision making and failing are very different things. You may make/take the best decisios, but yet fail, even after calculating the risk well. Life is about uncertanity, and guess thats waht makes everybody craving to 'control' it, hence one is worried/bothered about making decision to control it well, as per your needs/reqs. Make decisions, but be flexible enough to discard them and make new decisions, plans. For a decision made today may not be right/ hold true when things around you change and /or when you gain better maturity of the fields/life, which must have played a good role to help you make decisions. Above all, agree or not, there is always a master plan. For me every decision works, cause of my flexibility to mend them, discard them when needed, be oppurtunity seeker, keep your senses wide open, be quick to know when ur plans not working.. stay happy and content..once mastered this art, you wouldnt be as bothered if you ever failed/ or the decisions made failed.
A lil philosphical i guess, but thats how i take it.
Infact its a super topic to take up in our get together, will benefit all young n old in d group. Especially kids have to learn to make decisions.

  2. This post is very timely for me because I am in the process of making one of the biggest decisions of my life and probably the biggest decision of my professional career. Mostly I will talk about the decision making for career. Not sure what your situation is. I have been sleepless for last 3 weeks. I read so much about 'taking risk' 'decision making' and 'how to get out of comfort zone' etc etc. I have come to the conclusion that - DO WHAT YOU LOVE and everything else will fall in place. Don't think too much about what is going to happen tomorrow or few years down the road. No body has seen the future. Yesterday is history, tomorrow is mystery ,Today is the best gift you have got that's why its called Present (pun intended). While making a decision you can apply all the pros and cons, but remember Murhpy's law - If something can go wrong, it will go wrong. Not trying to scare ya, but there is only so much you can control. So, the conclusion is, take a calculated risk, don't think too far and too much and do what you love. Great leaders make a decision when they have 60% of the information. If you do it sooner, its too quick, if you try to uncover every small/big 'what if' scenario, you have waited too long.

Here are some of the quotes those have stuck with me , straight from Amitabh Bachchan's blog. Ofcourse most of these are career related, but still very motivating.

In life when we face choices, just throw a coin. Not because it settles the question, but while the coin is in the air you will know what your heart is hoping for'

‘Problems are not stop signs ; they are guidelines’

‘Be like a postage stamp – stick to one thing until you get there’

‘Never worry for the delay in success compared to the others. Because the construction of “WONDERS” takes more time than ordinary buildings’

‘The only job that you start at the top, is digging a hole’

I hope you find this useful and all the best in making that big decision. If you need more motivation, read following post.
